Senior Advocate Purna Man Shakya is a Columbia University graduate and one of Nepal’s leading and most prominent lawyers.
Senior Advocate Purna Man Shakya is one of the most respected figures in the Nepali legal profession, and the founding spirit from which the Reliance practice grew. In 1995 he established Reliance Law Firm, the practice that would in time give rise to Reliance Corporate Advisors, and today he lends his experience, reputation and judgment to the firm as its Patron. His association is more than titular: he remains a guiding presence whose standing at the Bar and in the courts continues to shape the firm’s approach to the most demanding matters.
His academic formation is unusually distinguished. After a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and an LLB from Delhi University, he read for a Master of Laws in Constitutional Law, again at Delhi, where he graduated as a Gold Medalist. He went on to Columbia University in New York as a Fulbright Scholar, earning a further LLM in Corporate Law. That combination of constitutional depth and corporate training has defined a career that moves fluently between questions of public power and the practical demands of commerce.
Over a career approaching four decades, Mr. Shakya has built a formidable practice across banking and corporate law, commercial litigation, and both domestic and international arbitration, and is widely regarded as one of the country’s foremost authorities on constitutional law and public policy. He also advises on foreign investment, guiding overseas capital through Nepal’s regulatory landscape. He has served as President of the Supreme Court Bar Association, one of the highest positions of trust the profession can confer.
His eminence is recognised beyond Nepal. He has been ranked as a leading lawyer by Chambers Asia-Pacific since 2018 and is listed among leading practitioners by The Legal 500, placing him within a small circle of Nepali advocates acknowledged by the international legal directories.
